Overview
In honor of the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution, the Town of Arlington, MA launched Arlington 250 a two year commemorative celebration running through 2024 and 2025. The goal: create awareness, build community excitement, and honor local history with programming, storytelling, and events.
Planet Lobo was selected to design the promotional visual system for the campaign bringing historical relevance to life through modern illustration, print, and digital storytelling.
Goals
Develop a cohesive visual identity for the multi-year Arlington 250 celebration
Create approachable, character-driven graphics to engage families and residents
Design both digital and printed materials to promote programming, history, and events
Provide flexibility across town-wide signage, social media, brochures, and flyers
What we did
Illustrated character set inspired by Revolutionary War history and local context
Designed the official Arlington 250 brochure (print + digital versions)
Created posters and print signage for use at Town Hall and across local venues
Developed print and digital event flyers
Built a flexible visual system for social media posts and ongoing updates
Designed materials for both 2024 awareness and 2025 programming rollout
Outcome
The Arlington 250 visuals brought a sense of warmth, accessibility, and story to what could have felt like distant history. The illustrated characters helped bridge the past and present especially for younger audiences and families while the overall design system unified the campaign across multiple years and media.
The materials have been used throughout Arlington’s public spaces, online channels, and event communications and will continue to shape community engagement throughout the celebration.
What made it special
This was more than a design project it was about connecting a town to its roots in a way that felt alive, inclusive, and community-driven. The illustrated characters offered a human touch, and the print designs gave the celebration real visibility from the front of Town Hall to classroom flyers and town-wide mailers.
